For many people in Karnali, Nepalgunj is the nearest big city.

From Nepalgunj airport, small planes fly to Simikot, Jumla, Dolpa, Bajura and Rara. People from those districts fly or drive down to shop, see a doctor, study or catch a connecting flight. In 2023, the Kathmandu Post reported that people in Humla fly to Nepalgunj even for minor operations.

That makes Nepalgunj a city with customers who don’t live there. Many of its most important customers live hundreds of kilometres away, in some of Nepal’s most remote districts.

Marketing to them takes a different approach.

I’m Bimal Raj Paudel, a growth and digital marketing strategist based in Kathmandu with over ten years of experience. I lead growth and marketing at Trip Turbo. To be clear from the start: I haven’t worked with a Nepalgunj client yet. I work with businesses across Nepal remotely and travel when a project needs it.

Talk to Me About Your Nepalgunj Business

The Gateway to Karnali

Nepalgunj was built as a trading town. In the 1860s, after the area was returned to Nepal, Jung Bahadur set up a bazaar here to control trade between the hills and India. More than 160 years later, it still plays that role.

Wholesalers, hardware shops, clothing stores, pharmacies and hotels all serve customers who come down from the hills. Many probably buy in bulk, because they won’t be back for weeks or months.

Why online marketing alone isn’t enough

Here’s the challenge. In the 2021 census, only about 20% of Karnali households had internet, the lowest of any province. A 2024/25 national survey found 82% of households across Nepal now have it, but Karnali still lags behind. Many customers there still rely on phone calls, word of mouth and relatives who live in Nepalgunj.

So marketing to Karnali customers needs online and offline working together:

  • A phone number that’s easy to find and always answered. Put it everywhere: your signboard, your Facebook page, your Google listing and your delivery slips.
  • WhatsApp and Viber for orders. A customer in Jumla can send a photo of what they need. You send back a price. Deals can happen this way.
  • Make referrals easy. Many Karnali customers hear about shops through someone they know. A happy customer who tells five people is your best marketing.
  • An accurate Google Maps listing. When a family arrives in Nepalgunj for the first time, they may search on their phone for a shop or hotel near the bus park or airport.
  • Facebook, but simple. Clear photos of products and prices. No complicated designs.

Transport and delivery

If you can send goods up to Karnali, say so loudly. Explain how ordering works, how long delivery takes and how payment works. For customers far away, reliable delivery is often worth more than a lower price.

Hospitals and Clinics

Nepalgunj is a major healthcare centre for western Nepal. Bheri Hospital, a federal hospital, says it serves millions of people across the mid-west, including Karnali, and the far west. Nepalgunj Medical College runs hospitals in Kohalpur and in Nepalgunj.

For patients travelling from far away, a hospital’s online presence is mostly about clear information:

  • Which services and specialists are available, and on which days.
  • How to reach the hospital from the airport and bus park.
  • Nearby places to stay for families.
  • A phone number that someone actually answers.

Pharmacies, labs, lodges and restaurants near hospitals can benefit too. Families arriving from Karnali will search for them on Google Maps.

Healthcare advertising has strict rules in Nepal. I explain them on my Chitwan page.

Cross-Border Trade With Rupaidiha

Nepalgunj sits only a few kilometres from the Indian border at Rupaidiha. A new integrated check post started operating in May 2024, with space for hundreds of trucks. At the opening, an official said clearance would take a few hours instead of about a day.

For importers, wholesalers, transporters and clearing agents, this is worth mentioning in your marketing. Faster clearance can mean faster delivery for your buyers.

The approach for trading businesses is similar to what I describe on my Birgunj page: clear product lists, delivery areas, fast replies and being found on Google for what you sell.

Bardiya National Park: Tiger Tourism

Bardiya National Park is about 90 km from Nepalgunj. The drive to Thakurdwara, where most lodges are, takes about two to three hours.

Bardiya is one of Nepal’s main tiger parks. The national tiger count published in July 2026 found 112 tigers there, down from 125 in 2022. Nationally, the count rose to 429.

Tourism is still small. From mid-July to the end of December 2025, the park recorded more than 3,000 foreign and about 7,100 domestic visitors, according to eKantipur.

Marketing a Bardiya lodge or resort

Guests choosing Bardiya are often deciding between it and Chitwan. Chitwan is easier to reach and better known. Bardiya offers a wilder, quieter experience.

That’s your story. Tell it well:

  • Sell the difference from Chitwan. Fewer crowds, more wilderness and a real chance of seeing tigers.
  • Be honest about sightings. Never promise a tiger. Share real photos and real sighting stories from guests instead.
  • Explain the journey clearly. Flights to Nepalgunj, then the drive to Thakurdwara. Offer airport pickup and say so.
  • Get your reviews in order. Foreign guests read TripAdvisor, Google and booking site reviews carefully before booking.
  • Plan for the seasons. Foreign travellers plan weeks or months ahead, so promote before the peak season, not during it.

Video marketing matters a lot here. A short clip from a real jungle walk or river safari sells Bardiya better than any paragraph.

Speak Awadhi When It Fits

Banke is a mixed district. Census data shows Nepali and Awadhi are the two biggest mother tongues, with Tharu third.

For local customers, a short video in Awadhi can feel much more personal than formal Nepali. For customers from the hills and Karnali, Nepali usually works better. Test both and compare the results.

Local Businesses in the City

Around Tribhuvan Chowk, Dhamboji Chowk and the Bageshwori Temple area, Nepalgunj is busy with shops, restaurants, coaching centres and clinics.

For these businesses, the basics matter most:

  • Google Maps. Correct name, hours, phone number and photos.
  • Reviews. Ask happy customers to leave one. My guide to getting more Google reviews in Nepal explains how.
  • Festival timing. Dashain draws big crowds to Bageshwori Temple. Plan offers before the festival starts.

How Working Together Works

I work with Nepalgunj businesses remotely, through calls, shared documents and messaging. When it’s worth it, I travel for a kickoff, a planning session or a shoot in Bardiya.

You work with me directly. And I’ll tell you honestly when something isn’t worth your money. In a market where many customers still rely on phone calls, a well-answered phone can beat an expensive ad campaign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you based in Nepalgunj?

No. I'm based in Kathmandu and I work with Nepalgunj businesses remotely. I travel when a project needs it, such as a kickoff or a shoot at a Bardiya resort. I haven't done client work in Nepalgunj yet, so you won't see invented local case studies on this page.

How do I reach customers in Karnali if internet use there is low?

Use online and offline together. In the 2021 census, Karnali had the lowest household internet access of any province. Access has grown a lot since, but Karnali still lags behind. Many Karnali customers rely on word of mouth, phone calls and relatives in Nepalgunj. Make your phone number and WhatsApp easy to find, keep your Google Maps listing accurate, and make it simple for people to recommend you to others.

What is the best way to market a resort near Bardiya National Park?

Sell the experience honestly. Show real photos of rooms, food and safaris, explain how guests get there from Nepalgunj, and be clear about what wildlife they might see without promising sightings. Foreign guests research weeks ahead and read reviews carefully, so your Google, TripAdvisor and booking site profiles matter as much as your ads.

Should I advertise in Awadhi?

It's worth testing for local customers. Census data shows Awadhi is the mother tongue of over a third of people in Banke district. A short video in Awadhi can feel much more personal than one in formal Nepali. For customers from the hills and Karnali, Nepali is usually the better choice.

Can hospitals in Nepalgunj advertise to patients from Karnali?

Hospitals can make useful information easy to find, like services, doctors, timings and directions. But healthcare advertising has strict rules in Nepal, and doctors follow the Nepal Medical Council's code. Focus on clear information rather than promotional ads.
