Nepali Date Converter — AD to BS and BS to AD

This free Nepali date converter changes dates between the English calendar (AD) and the Nepali calendar (BS), in both directions.

It opens with today’s date in Nepal already filled in. For every conversion it also shows:

Today is shown in the converter above, which is shown beside it in the Nepali calendar.

How Accurate Is This Converter?

Most date converters never tell you how they were tested. Here’s how this one was.

Every converter depends on a table listing how many days each Nepali month has in each year. Nepali months change length from year to year, so if one month in that table is wrong, every date after it comes out wrong too.

This converter’s table was checked day by day against three independent, widely used calendar libraries:

For every single date from 2000 BS to the end of 2083 BS, more than 30,000 days, it matches them exactly in both directions. It also gives the same answer wherever you are in the world, because the time zone of your device can’t shift the result.

One honest limitation: dates from 2084 BS onward use projected calendar data. Nepal’s official calendar for those years isn’t final yet, so they could shift by a day once it’s published. The converter warns you when you enter one of those dates.

How to Convert AD to BS (English to Nepali Date)

  1. Choose the AD → BS tab.
  2. Pick the English date.
  3. Click Convert to BS.

You’ll see the Nepali date, the weekday and the Nepali fiscal year.

Quick way to guess the year: add 57 to the AD year for dates from mid-April to December. Add 56 for dates from January to mid-April. So June 2026 falls in 2083 BS, and February 2026 falls in 2082 BS. For the exact day, use the converter.

How to Convert BS to AD (Nepali to English Date)

  1. Choose the BS → AD tab.
  2. Enter the BS year, choose the month, and enter the day.
  3. Click Convert to AD.

The converter won’t let you enter a day that doesn’t exist. For example, if Shrawan has 31 days that year, it won’t accept Shrawan 32.

Converting Your Date of Birth for a Passport or Visa

This is one of the most common reasons people need a BS to AD converter. Your citizenship certificate shows your date of birth in BS, but a passport, visa application or foreign bank form needs it in AD.

Why Do Nepali Months Have 29 to 32 Days?

Nepal’s official Bikram Sambat calendar is a solar calendar. Each month begins on Sankranti, the day the Sun moves into a new zodiac sign.

The Sun doesn’t spend the same amount of time in each sign. That’s because Earth’s orbit around the Sun isn’t a perfect circle. Around the middle of the year, Earth is farther from the Sun and moves more slowly. So the summer months, Jestha to Bhadra, last 31 or 32 days. In winter, Earth moves faster, so months like Poush and Magh last only 29 or 30 days.

The exact number of days shifts a little every year. That’s why you can’t convert Nepali dates with a simple formula. You need a table for each year.

Nepali festivals like Dashain and Tihar follow the Moon, not these solar months. That’s why their dates move around from year to year, in both calendars.

Nepal Fiscal Year Dates in AD

Nepal’s fiscal year runs from Shrawan 1 to the last day of Ashadh. That’s roughly mid-July to mid-July, but the exact English dates change each year.

The fiscal year under way right now is 2083/84.

Fiscal Year Starts (Shrawan 1) Ends (last day of Ashadh)
2080/81 17 July 2023 15 July 2024
2081/82 16 July 2024 16 July 2025
2082/83 17 July 2025 16 July 2026
2083/84 17 July 2026 16 July 2027
2084/85 17 July 2027 (projected) 15 July 2028 (projected)

Budgets, tax slabs and company accounts in Nepal all follow this fiscal year. For example, the new income tax slabs took effect on Shrawan 1, 2083. You can see what they mean for your pay with my salary tax calculator.

Why Is BS 56 to 57 Years Ahead of AD?

The Bikram Sambat era begins in 57 BCE, traditionally linked to King Vikramaditya. That puts it about 57 years ahead of the English calendar.

The number changes because the two calendars start their years at different times:

That’s why 2026 AD covers two BS years. It was 2082 BS until 13 April 2026, and it has been 2083 BS since 14 April 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my Nepali date of birth to English for a passport or visa?

Open the BS to AD tab above. Enter the year, month and day from your citizenship certificate or birth certificate, then click Convert. The result shows your date of birth in the English calendar, in both month-first and day-first formats. Use the format the form asks for, and make sure it matches your passport exactly.

What is today's date in Nepal?

The converter above opens with today's date in Nepal already filled in. It uses Nepal time, so it shows the correct Nepali date even if you are in another country where it is still the previous day.

Why do different Nepali date converters sometimes give different answers?

Every converter relies on a table of how many days each Nepali month has in each year. Some tables contain mistakes, and future years are only projections until Nepal's official calendar for that year is published. That is why two converters can disagree by a day. This converter's table was checked day by day against three independent calendar libraries.

How accurate is this Nepali date converter?

For every date from 2000 BS to the end of 2083 BS, this converter matches independent calendar libraries exactly, in both directions. That is more than 30,000 days checked. Dates from 2084 BS onward use projected calendar data and could shift by a day once the official calendar for those years is published.

Why do Nepali months have 29 to 32 days?

Nepal's Bikram Sambat calendar is a solar calendar. Each month begins when the Sun enters a new zodiac sign, known as Sankranti. The Sun does not spend the same time in every sign, because Earth's orbit is not a perfect circle. Around the middle of the year Earth moves more slowly, so months like Jestha, Ashadh and Shrawan last 31 or 32 days. In winter, months like Poush and Magh last only 29 or 30 days.

What are the 12 Nepali months in order?

The 12 Nepali months are Baisakh, Jestha, Ashadh, Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashwin, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun and Chaitra. The year starts with Baisakh in mid-April and ends with Chaitra in mid-April of the following year.

When does Nepal's fiscal year 2083/84 start and end?

Nepal's fiscal year 2083/84 runs from Shrawan 1, 2083 to the last day of Ashadh 2084. In English dates, that is 17 July 2026 to 16 July 2027.

How do I convert an AD year to BS in my head?

Add 57 to the AD year for dates from mid-April to December, and add 56 for dates from January to mid-April. For example, June 2026 is in 2083 BS, while February 2026 is in 2082 BS. This only gives you the year. For the exact day and month, use the converter, because Nepali months change length every year.

Is Nepal's Bikram Sambat the same as India's Vikram Samvat?

They share a name and a starting point, but they are not the same calendar. Nepal uses a solar version as its official civil calendar, starting with Baisakh in mid-April. The Vikram Samvat used in parts of India is lunisolar and is mainly used for religious dates. So the same date can be written differently in the two systems.

When is Nepali New Year 2084?

Baisakh 1, 2084 is expected to fall on 14 April 2027. Nepali New Year usually falls on 13 or 14 April in the English calendar.

Which years does this converter cover?

It converts dates from 1975 BS to 2090 BS, which is 13 April 1918 to 12 April 2034 in the English calendar. For older historical dates you will need a specialist historical calendar.
