Tilaurakot might be one of the most important places in the Buddhist world. It’s believed to be the site of ancient Kapilavastu, where the Buddha spent the first 29 years of his life.

Yet visitors spend, on average, around 39 minutes there.

According to a 2026 report in the Kathmandu Post, only about 7% of Tilaurakot’s visitors stay on in Taulihawa. More than 70% go straight back to Lumbini. In 2025, Lumbini drew around 700,000 Nepali visitors. Tilaurakot drew around 42,000.

That gap isn’t only a tourism problem. It’s a marketing problem. And it’s a big opportunity for any Kapilvastu business willing to go after it.

I’m Bimal Raj Paudel, a digital marketing strategist with over ten years of experience. I grew up in Butwal, about an hour from Taulihawa. I’m based in Kathmandu now, but this is my home region and I’m back often. I lead growth and marketing at Trip Turbo, Nepal’s #1 travel app.

I’ll be honest: I haven’t worked with a Kapilvastu client yet. But I understand this region better than a Kathmandu agency that has never been west of Butwal.

Talk to Me About Your Kapilvastu Business

Kapilvastu Is a District, Not One Town

People say “Kapilvastu” and mean different things. It’s worth being clear, because Google needs clarity too.

Area Population (2021) Known for
Kapilvastu Municipality (Taulihawa) 88,874 District headquarters, Tilaurakot
Buddhabhumi 76,507 Largest area of the three
Krishnanagar 70,111 India border crossing, trade, mills

The whole district has around 6.9 lakh people. If you run a business here, name your exact town on your website and Google profile. “Taulihawa” or “Krishnanagar” will help you more than a vague “Kapilvastu”.

The Tilaurakot Opportunity

Here’s how visitors to the two sites compared in 2025:

Visitors in 2025 Lumbini Tilaurakot
Nepali around 700,000 around 42,000
Indian around 270,000 around 19,000
Other foreign around 150,000 around 46,000

Tilaurakot is only about 27 kilometres west of Lumbini. Hundreds of thousands of people are already nearby. Most of them simply don’t come, or don’t stay.

In July 2025, UNESCO deferred a decision on adding Tilaurakot to the World Heritage list. It asked for more research and suggested the site might be added as an extension of Lumbini. If that happens, attention on Kapilvastu will grow fast. The businesses that are already visible online will benefit first.

What Hotels, Restaurants and Guides Can Do

The goal is to reach visitors while they are still in Lumbini, deciding what to do next.

  • Be on Google Maps properly. When someone in Lumbini searches for things to do nearby, a well-kept listing with good photos can put you in front of them.
  • Tell the story. Most visitors don’t know why Tilaurakot matters. A guide, hotel or restaurant that explains it clearly, in simple language, gives people a reason to make the trip and stay longer.
  • Speak to pilgrims. Many visitors come for religious reasons, not sightseeing. What they want is meaning, respect and good local knowledge.
  • Reach Indian visitors. Nearly 270,000 Indian visitors went to Lumbini in 2025. Many are already travelling by road and could easily add a stop.
  • Give a reason to stay the night. An evening experience, a local meal or an early-morning visit to the ruins. If only 7% stay on in Taulihawa, even a small increase matters.

Krishnanagar: Trade, Mills and the Border

Krishnanagar faces Barhani in India and is one of Nepal’s ten major customs points. Goods move through here to Dang, Arghakhanchi and beyond. The town has rice, oil, steel, sugar and cement mills.

Most businesses here sell to other businesses, not to tourists. That calls for a different kind of marketing.

A wholesaler or mill doesn’t need viral Facebook posts. It needs:

  • A Google Business Profile so buyers and transporters can find the right location.
  • A simple website that lists what you sell, your capacity and how to order.
  • WhatsApp as a sales channel. Most B2B conversations in this region already happen there. Make it easy.
  • Trust signals. How long you’ve been operating, who you supply, and clear contact details.

This is less glamorous than tourism marketing, but it often has a better return.

Agriculture and Local Businesses

Kapilvastu is farming country. Paddy and sugarcane are the main crops. Agri-dealers, seed and fertiliser shops, and rice mills serve thousands of farmers.

For these businesses, Facebook and WhatsApp are often the best tools. Farmers share information in local groups, and a trusted dealer who posts useful, timely advice about seasons, prices and products builds loyalty.

Schools

Kapilvastu Municipality alone has more than 100 schools. Buddhabhumi and Krishnanagar have dozens more. Private schools here compete for the same families every year.

For schools, the most important thing is being ready before admission season, and knowing the rules on when you can start enrolling. I’ve covered admissions marketing in detail on my Butwal page.

How Working Together Works

I work remotely by default. Calls, messages and shared documents cover most of the work. Because I’m back in the Butwal area often, meeting in person in Kapilvastu is easier for me than for most Kathmandu-based marketers. I’ll travel when a project needs it.

You deal with me directly. And I’ll tell you honestly if something isn’t worth your money. In a market where very few businesses are online yet, the basics done well usually beat expensive campaigns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should a Kapilvastu business work with you?

I grew up in Butwal, about an hour's drive from Taulihawa, so this part of Lumbini Province isn't unfamiliar to me. I'm now based in Kathmandu, but I travel back to the region regularly. I haven't worked with a Kapilvastu client yet, so I won't claim local case studies. What I bring is over ten years of digital marketing experience and a real connection to the region.

Is digital marketing useful in a place like Kapilvastu?

Yes, and partly because almost nobody is doing it. When I looked, there were almost no real digital marketing websites for Kapilvastu, Taulihawa or Krishnanagar. A local business that simply builds a good Google Business Profile and an active Facebook page can stand out quickly.

How can a hotel or restaurant near Tilaurakot get more visitors?

Most Tilaurakot visitors are day-trippers from Lumbini who stay less than an hour. The goal is to get in front of them before they leave Lumbini. That means strong Google Maps listings, good photos, reviews that mention Tilaurakot, and offers aimed at pilgrims and Indian visitors who are already in the area.

Do you work with businesses in Krishnanagar?

Yes. Krishnanagar's traders, wholesalers and mills mostly sell to other businesses, so their marketing is different from a shop's. It's usually about being easy to find, easy to trust and easy to contact, especially on Google and WhatsApp.

Which Kapilvastu areas do you cover?

The whole district. That includes Kapilvastu Municipality and Taulihawa, Buddhabhumi, Krishnanagar and the rest of the district's municipalities and rural municipalities.
