Digital Marketing in Dharan for Consultancies, Clinics and Local Businesses

Dharan is a city where many families have one foot abroad.
It was shaped by the British Gurkhas. The British Army still keeps a small recruiting station here for eastern Nepal. For decades, soldiers’ pensions and savings helped build the town. Today that outward-looking spirit shows up in a different way. You see it in the study-abroad consultancies and the Japanese and Korean language institutes. You see it in the families preparing a son or daughter to study overseas.
That makes Dharan a very particular market to advertise in. And since July 2026, the rules for one of its biggest sectors have changed completely.
I’m Bimal Raj Paudel, a digital marketing strategist based in Kathmandu with over ten years of experience. I’ll be honest up front: I haven’t worked with a Dharan client yet. I work with businesses outside the Valley remotely and travel when a project needs it. I lead growth and marketing at Trip Turbo, Nepal’s #1 travel app, and I’ve built growth for brands across the country.

Educational Consultancies: The Rules Just Changed
If you run a study-abroad consultancy, this matters more than anything else on this page.
In July 2026, the government approved new regulations for educational consultancies, language classes and preparation classes. Among other things, they require:
- A Rs 25 lakh security deposit and an annual renewal fee
- All payments to go through banks
- Compensation for students who are harmed, covering their financial loss and mental distress
- Licence cancellation for exploiting students, giving misleading information or leaving students stranded
One law firm’s guide to the rules goes further. It says consultancies should avoid unrealistic guarantees about admission, scholarships, visas, jobs or permanent residence abroad. It also says false or exaggerated information is prohibited.
Think about what that means for a typical consultancy ad. “Visa guaranteed.” “100% success rate.” “Get PR in two years.” Those lines were common. Now they could cost you your licence.
The sector needed it. The Kathmandu Post reports that around 1,500 consultancies operate in Nepal, but only 924 have renewed their licences with the Ministry. Students and parents have noticed.
What Good Consultancy Marketing Looks Like Now
The consultancies that win from here will be the ones that look the most trustworthy. That’s a good thing for honest businesses.
Here’s what I’d build for a consultancy:
- Show your registration. Your Ministry of Education approval should be easy to find on your website and profiles.
- Publish your fees. Clear pricing now builds trust instead of scaring people off.
- Create honest destination guides. Japan, Canada, Australia, the UK, the US and Korea are the biggest destinations for Nepali students. Useful, accurate guides for each one attract students who are researching, not just clicking ads.
- Share real student stories. With permission, and without inflated claims.
- Answer questions quickly. Students often message several consultancies at once. The one that replies clearly and fast usually wins.
Demand is still strong. The Ministry issued more than 1.2 lakh no-objection certificates for study abroad in 2025. The students are there. The way you reach them has to change.
Language Institutes
Dharan also has Japanese and Korean language institutes, often linked to study and work abroad. The same honesty rules apply to language and preparation classes. Market your teaching, your teachers’ qualifications and your students’ real results. Leave out the promises about outcomes you can’t control.
Clinics, Pharmacies and Lodges Around BPKIHS
The B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, known locally as Ghopa Camp, is one of the biggest institutions in eastern Nepal. It became a health sciences university in 1998 and runs a large teaching hospital.
Hospitals like this bring in patients and families from across the eastern hills. They need pharmacies, labs, food and places to stay nearby.
For businesses around BPKIHS, the easiest win is being findable on Google Maps. Someone arriving from another district will search for a pharmacy or lodge near the hospital. Make sure you appear with the right name, hours, phone number and photos.
If you’re a clinic or doctor, remember that healthcare advertising has strict rules in Nepal. I explain them in detail on my Chitwan page.
Sekuwa, Restaurants and Food
Dharan’s food is part of its identity. Pork sekuwa, sargemba, aalu nimki. Bagarkot is known for its sekuwa corners. Bhanu Chowk is the heart of the city.
Food businesses here should lean into that identity. People travel to Dharan partly to eat. A sekuwa place with great photos, a clear location on Google Maps and a steady stream of reviews will beat one that relies only on word of mouth.
Short videos of food being grilled or served do very well on Instagram and TikTok. They’re cheap to make and they show exactly what makes your place worth the trip. My guide to growing on Instagram covers the basics.
A Local Search Problem in the Birat Area
Dharan sits close to Itahari and Biratnagar. Itahari is roughly 15 kilometres away. Google often treats the three as one wider area.
That means a person searching for a service in Dharan can end up seeing businesses from Itahari or Biratnagar. If you’re a Dharan business, you’re competing with a much bigger pool than you might think.
The fix is to be very clear about where you are. Mention Dharan and local landmarks on your website. Keep your Google Business Profile accurate. Ask customers to mention Dharan in their reviews. These small signals help Google show you to the right people. There’s more on this in my local SEO guide.
Schools
Dharan has a large number of schools. Private schools compete hard for admissions every year, and admission season in Nepal now has strict rules on timing. I’ve covered those on my Butwal page.
How Working Together Works
I work with Dharan businesses remotely. Calls, shared documents and messaging cover most of the work. When it’s worth it, I travel for a kickoff, a workshop or a content shoot.
You work with me directly. And I’ll tell you honestly when something isn’t worth your money, especially now that some of the old consultancy marketing tricks have become a legal risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are you based in Dharan?
No. I'm based in Kathmandu and I work with Dharan businesses remotely. When a project needs it, I travel for kickoffs or planning sessions. I haven't done client work in Dharan yet, so I won't pretend to have local case studies. What I can offer is over ten years of experience and a clear understanding of the Dharan market.
Can my consultancy still advertise visa success?
Be very careful. Under the educational consultancy regulations approved in July 2026, the government can cancel a consultancy's licence for giving misleading information. One law firm's guide to the rules also says consultancies should avoid unrealistic guarantees about admission, scholarships, visas, jobs or permanent residence abroad. Ads that say visa guaranteed or 100 percent success are now a real risk.
How should an educational consultancy market itself now?
Lead with trust instead of promises. Show your Ministry registration, publish your fees clearly, share honest student stories, and create helpful content about each destination and its process. Students and parents are more careful than ever after the recent crackdowns, and honesty is now a competitive advantage.
Why do Dharan searches show businesses from Itahari or Biratnagar?
Because Dharan, Itahari and Biratnagar are close together and Google often treats them as one wider area. If your business is in Dharan, make that very clear on your website and Google profile, mention local landmarks like Bhanu Chowk, and ask happy customers to mention Dharan in their reviews.
Can clinics near BPKIHS advertise on Facebook?
Clinics and doctors in Nepal follow the Nepal Medical Council's rules, which discourage using social media to attract patients. A clear website and a strong Google Business Profile are safer and usually more useful for patients travelling in from other districts.
