Digital Marketing in Janakpurdham, Nepal: Maithili, Pilgrims and Wedding Season

In short
Janakpur's marketing calendar follows festivals and weddings: Chhath, Vivah Panchami in Mangsir, the December to mid-February pilgrimage peak and the lagan wedding season. Maithili, the mother tongue of most people in Dhanusha, is worth testing in local ads. Hotels should give day-visiting pilgrims reasons to stay the night, such as evening aarti and city packages, and local brands can use Mithila art to stand out.
In Janakpur, one of the biggest events of the year is a wedding.
Every year in Mangsir, the city celebrates Vivah Panchami, the marriage of Ram and Sita. A procession arrives from Ayodhya. Thousands of pilgrims fill the streets around Janaki Mandir. For about a week, the whole city is a wedding.
That tells you something about Janakpurdham. Faith, family and celebration drive a huge part of its economy. And it speaks its own language: Maithili.
A lot of digital marketing ignores both.
I’m Bimal Raj Paudel, a growth and digital marketing strategist based in Kathmandu with over ten years of experience. I lead growth and marketing at Trip Turbo, so I think a lot about how people plan travel in Nepal. I’ll be honest: I haven’t worked with a Janakpur client yet. I work remotely and travel when a project needs it.

Marketing in Maithili
Maithili is the second most spoken mother tongue in Nepal. More than 32 lakh people listed it in the 2021 census, which is about 11% of the country. In Dhanusha district, it’s the mother tongue of most people.
Yet many businesses advertise only in Nepali, Hindi or English.
That’s a gap. People respond to the language they speak at home. A short video in Maithili can feel like a neighbour talking. The same message in formal Nepali can feel like an advertisement.
Here’s how I’d use Maithili:
- Short videos and reels. Spoken Maithili works best on video, where tone matters more than spelling.
- Local offers. Festival greetings, wedding season offers and new arrivals.
- Two-language tests. Run the same Facebook ad in Maithili and Nepali. Compare messages and sales, not likes.
Keep your website and Google profile in Nepali and English too, so outsiders and search engines understand you. My guide to social media strategy in Nepal covers how to plan content across languages.
Pilgrims: Getting Visitors to Stay
Janaki Mandir was completed in 1910. It’s one of the most important Hindu temples in the region and draws pilgrims from across Nepal and India.
There’s a link with India that few cities in Nepal have. A bus service between Janakpur and Ayodhya started in 2018. A cross-border railway to Jaynagar in Bihar restarted passenger service in 2022, although services have been interrupted at times.
But Janakpur has a well-known problem. Pilgrims come for the day and leave.
In 2020, the Kathmandu Post reported that in peak season, from December to mid-February, 7 to 15 tour buses arrived every day at just one dharmashala. Most visitors stayed only one day. They visited the temples and moved on.
For hotels, restaurants and guides, that’s the real marketing challenge. Not getting people to Janakpur. Getting them to stay the night.
What helps:
- Sell the evening. Aarti at Janaki Mandir, the ponds lit up at night, and a good dinner. Make the evening sound like something you’d regret missing.
- Package the city. Janaki Mandir, Ram Mandir, Dhanush Sagar, Ganga Sagar and the Vivah Mandap can easily fill more than one day.
- Speak to Indian pilgrims in Hindi. Many come from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and further away. Your website and Google profile should make sense to them.
- Work with tour operators. Many pilgrims travel in groups. The operator decides where they sleep.
- Be easy to book. A clear website with prices and a WhatsApp number beats a hotel that only answers the phone.
The Festival and Wedding Calendar
Janakpur’s busiest times follow the calendar of festivals and weddings. Your marketing should too.
| When | What happens | Who should be ready |
|---|---|---|
| Kartik (Oct–Nov) | Chhath | Sweet shops, fruit sellers, clothing, transport |
| Mangsir (Nov–Dec) | Vivah Panchami | Hotels, restaurants, guides, decorations, souvenirs |
| Dec to mid-Feb | Peak pilgrimage season | Hotels, restaurants, tour operators |
| Wedding season | Lagan dates | Jewellers, tailors, clothing, caterers, tent houses, photographers, banquets |
| Chaitra (Mar–Apr) | Ram Navami | Hotels, restaurants, religious goods |
The rule is simple. Start promoting a few weeks before each peak. People plan their trips and wedding shopping ahead. By the time the festival starts, they’ve usually already decided.
Wedding businesses
Weddings are big business in Janakpur. Jewellers, clothing shops, tailors, caterers, decorators, photographers and banquet halls all depend on the lagan season.
For these businesses, digital marketing is mostly visual:
- Show your real work. Real jewellery designs, real wedding setups and real photos. Families want to see what you’ve done before.
- Use Instagram and Facebook as your catalogue. Save posts into collections, like bridal sets, groom wear or decoration themes.
- Reply fast on WhatsApp. Wedding shoppers compare several shops. The fastest clear reply often wins.
- Collect reviews after every wedding. A happy family is your best advert.
Mithila Art as a Brand Asset
Mithila painting is one of Nepal’s best-known art forms. In Janakpur, you see it on walls, at the railway station and in shops. The Janakpur Women’s Development Center has been producing Mithila art since 1989.
For local brands, this is a gift. Using Mithila designs in your logo, packaging, menus or social posts instantly says “Janakpur”. It sets you apart from businesses that look like they could be anywhere.
Work with local artists, credit them, and pay them fairly. Good graphic design can bring traditional art into modern branding without losing what makes it special.
A Growing Provincial Capital
Janakpur isn’t only a pilgrimage town. It’s the capital of Madhesh Province, and it’s growing. The Kathmandu Post reported that the city grew faster than the national average between 2011 and 2021, partly because of federalism. Its population reached 194,556 in the 2021 census.
More government offices, colleges and people mean more demand for schools, clinics, restaurants, coaching centres and shops. These local businesses need the basics:
- Google Maps. Correct name, hours, phone number and photos.
- Reviews. Ask happy customers to mention Janakpurdham. My guide to getting more Google reviews in Nepal explains how.
- Simple, honest offers. Clear prices and real photos beat flashy designs.
Schools and clinics have extra rules on advertising. I cover school admission rules on my Butwal page and healthcare rules on my Chitwan page.
How Working Together Works
I work with Janakpur businesses remotely, through calls, shared documents and messaging. Janakpur is a short flight from Kathmandu, so I can travel for a kickoff or a festival-season content shoot when it’s worth it.
You work with me directly. And I’ll tell you honestly when something isn’t worth your money.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are you based in Janakpur?
No. I'm based in Kathmandu and I work with Janakpur businesses remotely. Janakpur is a short flight away, so I can travel for a kickoff or a content shoot during the festival season. I haven't done client work in Janakpur yet, so I won't pretend to have local case studies.
Should my business post in Maithili?
If your customers are local, it's worth testing. Maithili is the mother tongue of most people in Dhanusha district and the second most spoken mother tongue in Nepal. Content in the language people speak at home often feels more personal than formal Nepali. Run the same offer in Maithili and Nepali and compare the results.
How can a Janakpur hotel get pilgrims to stay longer than one day?
Give them a reason to stay. Promote evening aarti at Janaki Mandir, a guided tour of the ponds and temples, a Mithila art workshop, or a combined package with nearby sites. Publish this before the pilgrimage season, in Hindi as well as English and Nepali, and work with the tour operators who bring in groups.
When should Janakpur businesses spend the most on marketing?
Plan around the festival and wedding calendar. Chhath in autumn, Vivah Panchami in Mangsir, and the winter pilgrimage season from about December to February are the big moments. Start promoting a few weeks before each one, because people plan travel and wedding shopping in advance.
Why does Google show results for Janakpuri in Delhi?
Because the names are so similar. To help Google show your business to the right people, use Janakpurdham, Dhanusha and Nepal on your website and Google Business Profile, and mention local landmarks like Janaki Mandir.
