Bhaktapur Municipality is only the historic city. Madhyapur Thimi, Suryabinayak and Changunarayan are separate municipalities, even though people often lump them together.

For a small business, that’s actually good news. The area is compact, so local search is less crowded than in Kathmandu. When I checked, searches for digital marketing in Bhaktapur mostly turned up Facebook pages and directories rather than real websites. A business that does the basics well can stand out quickly.

It also means being precise helps. If your guesthouse is near Taumadhi or your shop is by Pottery Square, say so. Visitors search for places near what they came to see.

Guesthouses, Homestays and Cafés

Visitors walking around Bhaktapur make quick decisions. They’re hungry, tired or curious, and they open Google Maps to see what’s nearby.

So for guesthouses, homestays and cafés, your Google Business Profile is the most important marketing you have. Here’s what I’d check:

• Is your pin in the right place? In old streets, a wrong pin sends people away.
• Are your photos real and recent? Visitors want to see the courtyard, the room and the rooftop view, not a stock image.
• Do you reply to reviews? A thoughtful reply to a complaint often wins more trust than a dozen five-star reviews.
• Do your hours match reality? Nothing loses a customer faster than arriving at a closed door.

Then think about your biggest visitor groups. If Indian families are a large share of your guests, your listings and offers should speak to them. They may care about vegetarian food, family rooms and easy transport from Kathmandu. That’s different from what a solo backpacker wants.

Pottery, Juju Dhau and Craft Sellers

Bhaktapur is known for its pottery, its handicrafts and its juju dhau, the famous buffalo-milk curd. These are things visitors love and remember.

The problem is that most craft sales happen once. A visitor buys a bowl, flies home, and the relationship ends.

A little digital work can change that:

• Capture the customer. A small card with your Instagram or website, handed over with every purchase.
• Show the making. Short videos of pottery being thrown or wood being carved are perfect for Instagram and TikTok. They show craft that factory goods can’t copy.
• Sell online. A simple store with good photos and clear shipping lets visitors buy again from home and tell friends where to find you.

For food businesses like juju dhau sellers, being on Google Maps with good photos matters more than anything. Visitors actively look for the famous local curd.

Everyday Businesses in Bhaktapur

Not every Bhaktapur business serves tourists. Schools, clinics, shops and service businesses serve the people who live here.

For these, the approach is simpler. Show up well on Google Maps. Keep a clear, active Facebook page. Make it easy to call or message you.
